The daily usage rate allows you to determine whether you need to order the
item, and, if so, how many you need to order. This is where the days
specified in the Item History Criteria window come into play. For each item
at the appropriate location, the system gets the quantity available (quantity
on hand - quantity on reserve + quantity on purchase order). (See
Important note below.) It then takes the daily usage rate and multiplies it by
the sum of the safety stock days and lead time days you entered. This
determines the days' supply for the item. If the item's quantity available is
less than the expected days' supply, it must be ordered and is printed on the
report. The quantity that will be suggested to order is the calculated daily
usage multiplied by the total days from the Item History Criteria window. If
the item's quantity available is more than the expected days' supply, it is not
printed on the report. Refer to the example below.
Because Item A's quantity available is below the order point, it needs to be
ordered and will be printed on the report. On the other hand, Item B will not
be printed on the report since there is more than enough available. The next
question is, how much of Item A do you need to order? This could be very
straightforward:
Total days x Daily usage = Desired supply
(45 x 4.73 = 212.85)
Desired supply - Quantity available = Order quantity
(212.85 - 100 = 112.85)
