We

a

of

in

to
the
unfortunate

imbroglio.
There
can
be
no

in
tbe
minds

unpreju-

that
great
frauds
bare
been

in
the
department

by
those
who
surrounded
General
Fremont,
but
no
one
be-
lieves
that
the
General
himself
was
a
party
to
them.
The
objection
urged
against
him
wa
of
a
totally
different
character.
In
the
first
place,
the
fact
that
he
admitted
notorious

his
confidence,
argued
a
lack
of

one
of
the
most
essential
qualifications
of
a
General.
In
the
next
place,
his
proceedings
in
M.
Louis
excited
in
the
minds
of
tbe
calm
and
thoughtful
an
appre-
hension
that
his
effjrts

more
of

in

than
tbe

For the
;
urpost-s
of
this
article
it
will
only
be
neeessarr
to
recall
a
few
prominent
tacts
!
Oa
takicg
the
command
of
the
department
of
the
West,
he
assumed
a
state
and
pomp
which
contrasted
oddly
enough
with
the
simplicity
of
rej.ablii.an
manners.
And
again,
fortifications
on
a
grand
scale
were
erected
in
the
vicinity
o*
St.
Louis,
for
which
there
appeared
to
be
no
immediate
necessity
;
end
other
things
were
.::.'•
for
which
it
is
difficult
to
account,
unless
upon
the
hypothesis
that
Fremont
wanted
to
entrench
himself,
not
against
the
enemy,
but
the
Government
itself,
if
such
a
contingency
should
arise.
These
were
the
opinions,
we
repeat,
which
prevailed
in
well
informed
and
intelligent
cir-
cles,
not
only
here
bot
on
the
other
side.
The
spwch
which
General

pub-

correspondence
from
that
city,
yesterday,
would
seem
to
give
some

the

"

remarked
the
General,

La
reply
to
this,
it
could
be
sail
with
truth,
that
when
the

to

to

But
whatever
